Women in Qatar

Qatar is one of the Islamic countries known for its rich economy and high GDP growth rates. Amid all of these Qatar has also been in news for its condition of women and conservative beliefs about women.  Being rich in the economy, women's family and social rights are still questioned.

Male guardianship law prevails in the country still.  It means women have to seek permission for education, study abroad, and marry the male supreme members of their family. They can be fathers, brothers, or any male member in authority.

In public, women are generally asked to be in traditional clothes like the burkha to conceal their appearance.

Women of Qatar outnumber males in terms of education and achieving high degrees. The adult literacy rate is 97%. However, the male guardianship law still set some restrictions on women who want to study abroad or pursue basic education.

Labour force participation paces of Qatari women are above the world average and among the highest in the Arab World, which is mainly a result of an increasing number of Qatari women who are attaining academic degrees.

In 2001, Qatar passed the Civil Service Act creating a legal framework safeguarding women's rights in the workforce.

While high rates of Qatari women earning academic degrees, it is predicted that there will be high employment rates for women.  Despite high rates of employability in the public sector, the rates are less in the private sector. Male domination still exist in business sector.

Amnesty International
The article by Amnesty also says that women in Qatar face discrimination in law and practice.  In 2021 they remained tied to their male Guardian. After the divorce, they struggled to act as children's guardians.

The Qatari government is creating policies and laws to safeguard the rights of women. In the education sector, women are achieving high academic degrees while still lagging behind that developed countries. Social freedom and rights in the family are still a cause of concern while Qatari women leaders are robustly working towards it.
